I went out into the backyard today and saw that the kids had left snack and snack wrappers all over the place. As I was starting to think of how to approach them on the situation (the ants will be coming, no more snacks outside, etc.) I hear a noise. I look towards the sound and see this...
Okay, he looks kind of cute, but then I see another one come out. His hair is all a mess. I grab my camera phone and take a picture and send it to Ben. I immediately call him wondering what the crap has taken over our backyard? He says he will call me back after he looks at the picture. At this point a third one comes out and comes right up to me. He is not scared in the least. I, on the other hand, am imagining them jumping on me while holding the baby. I am standing on the trampoline now so they can not get to me. I feel as if I am being surrounded.
Ben now calls me back and tells me that they are possums and his boss says they are not a nuisance. Really, then I will catch them and put them in his yard. I then proceed to tell Ben that I am going to let Taylor out to get them. After I do this I let Ben know that our problem has been solved because the possum is laying dead in the backyard. Ben laughs and says "they are playing possum". What? He tells me to let the dog back in and watch it. Sure enough after a few minutes it gets up. So, I let Taylor back out so I could see the whole thing take place. Yep, as soon as Taylor gets near it if falls over and plays dead. Stupid thing. I think that I will be calling Animal Control to see if they will take care of this problem. If not, I will be calling the guy I rent from (there are perks to being a renter). I then tell the kids to get out and pick up all those snacks because they are feeding that possum. (Probably not, but they won't know.)
Here are the pictures of it playing possum as well as a cool lizard that was out back.
Closure: Taylor was not going to be fooled twice. She hunted these for the next two days until she caught them and killed them.
